Osteoporosis, Nutrition And Chiropractic

Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones become less dense, more fragile, and at greater risk for fracture.*

The people who are at greatest risk tend to be post-menopausal women (reduced estrogen production) and those with a family history of Osteoporosis. In fact, more women die from Osteoporosis-related fractures than from Breast and Ovarian Cancer combined. Men are affected as well, but lose bone mass at about half the rate of women.

Prior fracture, smoking, low body weight, long-term use of certain medications such as prednisone, alcoholism, sedentary lifestyle and other factors may increase the chances of developing Osteoporosis.

Fractures are the most common problem associated with Osteoporosis, the most severe and frequent mostly occurring in the spine and hips.

Calcium is the best documented nutrient for metabolism of bone. Research has shown that Calcium supplementation with vitamin D3 significantly reduces loss of bone mass and subsequent risk of fractures.

Vitamin D deficiency has also been linked to mis-diagnosis of Fibromyalgia Syndrome, as well as muscle weakness, impaired neuromuscular coordination, and impaired bone formation.

Physical activity and a healthy diet including at least 200mg of calcium per serving are two important contributors to bone health especially later in life. The recommended daily allowance for Calcium supplementation, with Calcium Citrate being the most absorbable, is 1000-1500 mg/day.

In addition to Osteoporosis, low Calcium has also been associated with other serious conditions such as hypertension, colon cancer, pre-menstrual syndrome and formation of kidney stones. At first glance, one might think that too much dietary Calcium might contribute to developing kidney stones, however research has shown the exact opposite to be true. Low Calcium intake actually INCREASES your risk of developing kidney stones.
